How to Write Great Meta Descriptions
A meta description is the short summary that appears under your page title in search results. It does not directly affect rankings, but a compelling one improves click-through rate.
Ideal length
Aim for roughly 150–160 characters. Longer descriptions get truncated with an ellipsis, cutting off your message.
What to include
- Your primary keyword, naturally placed near the start.
- A clear benefit or answer to the searcher's intent.
- A subtle call to action ("Learn how…", "Compare…", "Free…").
Common mistakes
- Duplicating the same description across many pages.
- Keyword stuffing that reads unnaturally.
- Leaving it blank, letting search engines pick a random snippet.
