How UTM tagging works
UTM parameters are plain query-string keys appended to a link. When someone clicks it and lands on a page running Google Analytics (or most other analytics tools), the script reads them from the URL and records where the visit came from. They are not sent to search engines for ranking; they exist only so your reports can separate a newsletter click from a social post or a paid ad that all point to the same page.
The five parameters
| Parameter | Status in this tool | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
utm_source | Required (*) | The specific origin of the traffic | newsletter, facebook |
utm_medium | Required (*) | The channel type | email, cpc, social |
utm_campaign | Required (*) | The campaign or promotion name | spring_sale |
utm_term | Optional | The paid keyword | running shoes |
utm_content | Optional | Distinguishes variants, links or A/B versions | header_banner |
The tool shows a hint if any of the three starred fields are empty, and it skips any blank field entirely rather than writing an empty parameter.
What the builder does to your URL
It parses your base address with the browser's URL parser, sets each filled parameter, and prints the result. That has useful consequences: existing query parameters and any #fragment are preserved, spaces in values are encoded automatically, and if the URL already contains a utm_source it is overwritten rather than duplicated. A base URL without https:// is rejected with a validation message.
Worked example
Base URL https://example.com/pricing?ref=partner#plans, source linkedin, medium social, campaign q3_launch, content carousel_ad gives:
https://example.com/pricing?ref=partner&utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=q3_launch&utm_content=carousel_ad#plans
Common mistakes
- Inconsistent casing. Analytics treats
Emailandemailas different values, which splits your reports. Pick lowercase and underscores and document the convention. - Typing a plus sign for spaces. Values are encoded for you, so a literal
+becomes%2B. Type a normal space in a term like "running shoes" and it is written asrunning+shoes. - Tagging internal links. Putting UTMs on links between pages of your own site can start a new session and overwrite the original source in your reports. Use them only on links that come from outside.
- Putting private data in them. UTMs are visible in the address bar and in shared links. Never include emails or user IDs.
- Using the wrong medium. Standard values such as
cpc, emailandsocialmap to Google Analytics default channel groups. An invented medium likeblastoften lands in "Unassigned" or "Other".
Effect on SEO
Tagged URLs are separate addresses to a crawler, so give the destination page a canonical tag pointing to the clean URL. Build one with the meta tag generator. To see how a tagged link is percent-encoded, try the URL encoder and decoder.
