Percentage to CGPA Calculator

Convert between percentage and CGPA instantly.

8.95
CGPA

The CBSE rule is CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5 (and percentage = CGPA × 9.5). Some universities use a ÷10 or subject-specific formula — pick the factor your institution publishes.

How to use the Percentage to CGPA Calculator

  1. 1 Choose whether to convert percentage to CGPA or CGPA to percentage.
  2. 2 Enter your value.
  3. 3 Pick the conversion factor your institution uses (9.5 or 10).
  4. 4 Read the converted result.

Two conversion factors, two directions

The tool does one multiplication or division. In percentage-to-CGPA mode it divides your percentage by the chosen factor, and in CGPA-to-percentage mode it multiplies by it. The two factors offered are 9.5, the multiplier associated with CBSE (the Central Board of Secondary Education in India), and 10 for institutions that simply scale a 10-point CGPA by ten. The result is shown to two decimals. Percentages must be 0 to 100 and a CGPA 0 to 10; anything outside that range shows a message instead of a number.

DirectionFormulaExample
Percentage → CGPA (9.5)% ÷ 9.585 → 8.95
CGPA → percentage (9.5)CGPA × 9.59.2 → 87.40%
Percentage → CGPA (10)% ÷ 1085 → 8.50
CGPA → percentage (10)CGPA × 107.5 → 75.00%

Worked example

A student with 85% reads 85 ÷ 9.5 = 8.947, shown as 8.95 on the 9.5 setting but 8.50 under the 10 factor. In reverse, 7.5 CGPA becomes 71.25% with 9.5 and 75% with 10. The 3.75-point gap on an identical CGPA shows why the choice of factor matters on an application form.

Why there is no single correct formula

  • The factor is a convention. The 9.5 multiplier was adopted for CBSE's grading scheme as an approximation of average marks per grade point. Use it for CBSE results and for institutions that explicitly adopt it.
  • Universities set their own rules. Some publish a different formula, such as one with an offset (for example (CGPA − 0.75) × 10), or a table by grade band. When a university states a rule, follow that one, not this page.
  • Scale matters. Both factors assume a 10-point CGPA. A 4.0 GPA from a US-style system is a different thing, so use the GPA calculator for that.
  • Official transcripts win. Employers and admissions offices may ask for the converted figure on the institution's own certificate, so treat this output as an estimate for forms that accept self-calculated values.

To work out a course percentage from weighted assessments before converting it, use the grade calculator. For general percentage maths, the percentage calculator covers it.

Examples

  • ▸ 85% ÷ 9.5 = 8.95 CGPA. A 9.2 CGPA × 9.5 = 87.4%.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert percentage to CGPA?

The CBSE formula divides your percentage by 9.5 to get CGPA, and multiplies CGPA by 9.5 to get percentage back.

What is the difference between the 9.5 and 10 factors?

The factor sets how many percentage points one CGPA point is worth. At 85%, the 9.5 setting gives a CGPA of 8.95 and the 10 setting gives 8.50. Use whichever your board or university states for official conversions.

Is the converted value accepted for admissions or jobs?

Only if the recipient accepts a self-calculated figure. Many universities and employers want the percentage printed on your official transcript or a conversion certificate, so treat this output as an estimate unless told otherwise.

Why 9.5?

The 9.5 multiplier is the figure CBSE has published for converting its 10-point CGPA to an approximate percentage, based on average marks per grade point. It is specific to that board, and universities may use a different factor, so confirm the one your institution publishes.
